Sarah Javed, founder of Crescent Town Youth Next

Crescent Town is a diverse and vibrant community home to many immigrant, refugee, and low-income families. Through our initiatives in Crescent Town Youth Next, we hope to provide free opportunities for youth in the community by increasing access to education, mentorship, and STEAM engagement experiences.

2026 Summer STEAM Camp

Learn

Crescent Town Youth Next’s summer camp program is a unique, free opportunity designed for youth in grades 4–8 residing in the Crescent Town community. During each camp session, youth will take part in a one-hour STEAM lesson while working through a printed workbook connected to the lesson content. Both the lessons and workbook are thoughtfully curated by the founder of Crescent Town Youth Next, Sarah Javed, with support from the organization’s Program Support Coordinator, Rayyan Javed.

Participate

Throughout the program, workbooks will be reviewed and marked by volunteers and camp organizers. To encourage participation and engagement, prizes will be awarded during lessons for contributions such as answering questions and participating in discussions. Additional prizes will also be given at the midway and final points of the program to youth who complete their workbooks in their entirety.

Create

Following each lesson, youth will participate in hands-on STEAM activities connected to the day’s learning that they will be able to take home, with highlights including engineering their own electrical cars, constructing fiber optic lights, creating slime, tie dyeing tote bags, and so much more. During every camp session, youth will also be provided with snacks, with freezies offered on especially hot days throughout the summer.

Connect

Throughout the program, youth will also have opportunities to socialize and build meaningful connections with one another through free-time activities such as board games, building kits, puzzles, and other interactive games. To celebrate both the first and final day of camp, all youth and parents will also enjoy a pizza party together.

The Youth Behind Crescent Town Youth Next

Sarah Javed, founder of Crescent Town Youth Next

Sarah Javed

Founder · Crescent Town Youth Next

Hi everyone! My name is Sarah Javed, and I am a second-year student at the University of Toronto. Growing up in the Crescent Town community as a second-generation immigrant, I witnessed many families around me facing challenges related to affording rent, food, and STEAM programming for youth.

Throughout the years, I have been actively involved in the community through Crescent Town Tenants Union, helping organize food drives, youth athletic programs, and other initiatives for youth. However, as many of these youth programs gradually stopped running in the community, I noticed there was a growing gap in free, accessible opportunities for young people.

Given my passion for STEAM, research, education, and mentorship, I wanted to help fill that void by creating free, hands-on learning opportunities for youth in Crescent Town. This year, through Crescent Town Youth Next’s 2026 Summer STEAM Camp, I hope to make STEAM more accessible, engaging, and inspiring for youth in the community while creating a fun and supportive environment where they can learn, explore, and discover new interests.

Rayyan Javed, Program Support Coordinator at Crescent Town Youth Next

Rayyan Javed

Program Support Coordinator · Crescent Town Youth Next

Hi everyone! My name is Rayyan Javed, and I am a Grade 12 student in the Advanced Placement Program at Bloor Collegiate Institute. Over the years, like Sarah Javed, I have worked with youth in areas related to STEAM and education, from volunteering as a science camp leader at the Ontario Science Centre to currently working part-time at Kumon. Through my role as the Program Support Coordinator, I am excited to support Sarah Javed in launching Crescent Town Youth Next’s first initiative: our free 2026 Summer STEAM Camp. I look forward to helping make STEAM more accessible and engaging for youth in the Crescent Town community!

Why volunteer with us?

A key goal of our 2026 Summer STEAM Camp initiative is not only to increase STEAM engagement among youth, but also to create accessible and meaningful volunteer opportunities within Crescent Town. Many STEAM-related volunteer roles are far from the community and require costly transportation or long commutes. Through this program, we hope to make volunteering more accessible, rewarding, and impactful for local youth.
